Chelsea have managed to sign Brazilian international defender David Luiz from Benfica for £21.4m, just in time before the transfer window closed at 11pm tonight.

David Luiz is capable of playing in the centre of defence but he can also as a full-back on either side.

The Brazilian has made 70 appearances for Benfica in the Portuguese Liga this season, scoring four goals, whilst he also has four caps for Brazil.

David Luiz has signed five and a half year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool FC confirmed this afternoon that Newcastle United have accepted a club record transfer offer for Andy Carroll after the striker asked to leave St James Park.

Carroll had been a subject of a failed bid from Tottenham Hotspur last week and if Torres is sold to Chelsea before the end of the transfer deadline it would of left Liverpool short up front without Torres.

Liverpool has been given permission by Newcastle to discuss personal terms with Andy Carroll, who will now travel to Liverpool for a medical with a view to completing the deal today.

Liverpool Manager Kenny Dalglish had stressed the need for a replacement when a player leaves the club. “If someone’s going to go, you’ve got to have a replacement”,

Kenny Dalglish has been a busy man in the transfer market after Liverpool confirmed the services of another player earlier, Luis Suarez has signed a five-and-half-year contract at Liverpool. The striker moves to Anfield from Ajax in a deal worth 26.5million euros (£22.7m) and Liverpool are also hoping to announce the signing of Blackpool’s Charlie Adam before the end of the day.

Birmingham have confirmed the signing of Obafemi Martins, the striker joins the Blues from Rubin Kazan after the player flew into England on Sunday to finalise terms, City has today confirmed that Martins had been granted a work permit for the deal to go through in time before the transfer window closes 11pm tonight.

Blues boss Alex McLeish has been determined to sign a striker with proven Barclays Premier League experience and Martins, who will wear number 17, fits that bill.

Martins had a successful three year spell with Newcastle between 2006-09 season where he scored 39 goals in 105 appearances for the Magpies.

Blackpool have secured the services of two players on the final day of the transfer window, Ian Holloway has moved quickly to sign James Beattie on loan until the end of the season & Andy Reid has joined permanently for an undisclosed fee from Sunderland.

Andy Reid transfer to Blackpool could now open the door for Charlie Adam’s departure to Liverpool.

Rangers striker James Beattie joins the Tangerines after only managing just seven appearances for the Ibrox club since joining them in August.

A number of clubs had been linked with the former England striker but the 32-year-old has decided to join Blackpool.

Beattie will hope that an impressive spell at Blackpool will secure a permanent move.

Blackpool are currently lying in 12th spot in the Premier League with 15 games remaining in the season.

Fernando Torres has joined Chelsea today for a £50m deal from Liverpool breaking the British transfer record after the Reds initially rejected a transfer bid from Chelsea last week.

The striker then subsequently handed in an official transfer request the next day, which was rejected and today Chelsea made an improved offer which Liverpool found head to resist considering the players had already made up his mind that he wanted to leave Anfield.

Fernando Torres joined Liverpool in the 2007 season and made his competitive debut for Liverpool against Aston Villa in a 2–1 win on 11 August 2007.

Torres has since made 142 appearances and scoring 81 times for the club and the 26 year old now seeks a new challenge in hope of winning silverware at Stamford Bridge.

Having completing his transfer to Chelsea, the striker said; “I am very happy with my transfer to Chelsea and I am looking forward very much to helping my new team-mates this season and for many years to come.

“Having played against Chelsea many times since coming to England, and in some very big games I will never forget.

“I know there are many great players here and I will work hard to win a place in the team. I hope I can score some important goals for the supporters to enjoy this season.”

West Ham have signed Robbie Keane on loan until the end of the season after rejecting a bid from Tottenham for Scott Parker. Keane was subjected to a failed bid two weeks ago when Birmingham tried to snap up the striker on a permanent deal.

“We’re delighted to sign a world class striker. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy drives a hard bargain but we’ve got our man,” said West Ham chairman David Gold.

Keane will become West Ham’s fourth signing of the January transfer window after the arrival of Demba Ba, Wayne Bridge and Gary O’Neil at Upton Park,

David Gold has also assured West Ham fans that Scott Parker is not for sale and that he will resist any future offers for the England international before the transfer window closes.

“Nobody can leave. You can see our situation. We would fight off any club pursuing our players,” he said Gold. “The next 14 games will be as important a 14 games as there have been in the history of the football club.”

Sunderland have completed a loan deal to land Inter Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari, the Ghana ace has joined the Black Cats until the end of the season and joins fellow countrymen Asamoah Gyan and John Mensah at Sunderland.

Muntari had been plying his trade in the Serie A with current European champions Inter Milan and could make his debut against Stoke next weekend.

Steve Bruce spoke of his delight at landing Muntari with his first signing of the January transfer window.

“Sulley is a fabulous acquisition for the club,” Sunderland’s manager told his club’s official website.

“When the opportunity arises to bring in a player of his ability, even in the short term, you have to take it and I’m delighted we’ve been able to.

Speaking on Muntari’s ability to adapt to most positions, he added;

“His adaptability is a great asset. He did extremely well at Portsmouth so he knows the Premier League well and you have to be some player to move to Inter Milan for the fee that he did. He’s a great addition.

“If you had said to me six months ago that we’d be looking at Sulley Muntari who had just won the Champions League I would have said ‘not a chance’.

“This is an ideal opportunity to bring in a top-class midfield player who moved to Inter for about €17m. To bring him in now can only give the club a lift.”
